About Me

Better Edge Knifeworks originated as a hobby and a fascination for the craft. What started as sharpening my own knives turned into sharpening my family's knives, which led to sharpening my coworkers' knives, and ultimately led me to serve the Greater Victoria Area.

My goal is simple: to pass the care and precision forward from my equipment to folks locally. Not only would you be supporting local business, but you're also supporting a student who is looking to turn their passion into a full-time gig.

FAQ(s)

Have questions? Find answers to some common queries below.

What are your hours?

I currently work by appointment only. Turnaround is typically 24-72 hours and can be discussed. Click here for more info on turnaround. Click here to reach out.

How often do knives need sharpening?

It depends on many factors like steel composition, how often its used, what you're cutting, and how its cared for. How addicted are you to that razor sharp goodness?

Will you change the look of my knife?

Never without reason and consent. Unless you want me to? Chip repair and thinning will slightly alter the shape and/or finish of one's knife. The original finish and geometry of a knife are a priority unless you are looking for a change.

Will you teach me how to sharpen knives?

Teaching folks how to sharpen knives is not something I do. I don't have the space, nor am I comfortable in someone else's flat. That said, I have made videos in the past outlining the basics and tailoring them to one's equipment. Click here to send me a message if this is of interest to you.

Do you use power tools and electric grinders?

No, all sharpening and repairs are done by hand on Japanese waterstones.

Do you know how to work on single bevel knives? Or assymetrical grinds?

Absolutely. Yannagiba's, deba's, and usuba's are some of my favourite knives. Rest assured, steps will be taken to ensure a proper bevel, shinogi, ura, and koba to your preference.

Is there anything you can't sharpen?

Japanese and western kitchen knives, pocket knives, utility knives, chisels, scissors - no problem. Ceramic knives, industrial equipment, and mandolines unfortunatley not. Serrated knives can be honed but not sharpened.
